NEXUS
Bio and Facts

Short NEXUS story
(from an interview
for ProgResiste Magazine)
The story of NEXUS really started
a long time ago... in the 70’s... as the “secret dream of young schoolboys” (as
it is expressed in our first album Detrás del Umbral)
I met Carlos Lucena the very first day of highschool... in Morón, the city in
which we were born. We immediately realized that we were the only two boys (out
of a class of more than 50!) that shared the same passion for music..... And so
we became very close....
Carlos and I were at that time playing at different bands.. and we both played
guitar!
But one day I was walking by the house of a neighbor (a guy quite older than me)
and there was that incredible music coming out.... which made me say “wow!!”...
After a couple of minutes of flying with those incredible sounds, I decided to
knock at the door.... and my neighbor came out... I asked him “Excuse me, but
could you please tell me what is this amazing music you are listening to..?” And
he answered: “Oh yes! This is “Blues Variations”, by Emerson, Lake & Palmer!”.
That was enough...! The Hammond sound simply blew my head off...!! and that same
day I changed my guitar for an old Farfisa organ...!
After that day I started playing organ... with Carlos in guitars... and with
Luis Nakamura, who was already playing drums in Carlos band... That was NEXUS
birth...!!
Then, with different line-ups, we all 3 played for years at every possible place
here in Argentina...! Always loyal to our deep commitment to
progressive-symphonic rock... the most emotional music we had ever heard..!
We used to spend the after-school time listening to grand works such as Close to
the Edge, Tarkus, Relayer, The Lamb lies down on Broadway, Pictures at an
exhibition, Selling England by the pound, Trilogy, Larks Tongues in Aspic,
Fragile, Brain Salad Surgery and others...
We used to rehearse almost everyday at my grandmother’s house... The, for us now
“mythical”, “house of Yaya”...!
And our energy came exclusively from the pleasure of creating and playing music
for our audience’s hearts ... and for ours!!
Never a thought for a recording and/or commercial project...!!
We were somewhat “crazy”, I think......
We used to rehearse every day..... for hours and hours......!!
In those times I composed tons of material...... and we played in countless
places....!
This was the period in which Daniel Ianniruberto (Carlos’ cousin!) joined the
band... the 80’s... and immediately we saw that we had found the bass player we
had always looked for..
After many years of learning and improving the quality of our music, lyrics and
interpretation, in 1987 I left Argentina and moved to Holland.. were I studied
and worked for almost two years...
This was a kind of “breakpoint”...
I exchanged many letters with Carlos in which we shared ideas about making NEXUS
music known outside Argentina...
When I came back, in 1989, I immediately met with Carlos, Luis and Daniel and we
made the commitment to start working to make NEXUS music reach the world....!
I must say that it was not an easy project in Argentina..!! it was a really
ambitious objective at that time.....
We started again the full-time composition and rehearsal process... and after a
couple of months Mariela Gonzalez joined the band...
Up to that point Carlos had been the bands’ voice... but he wanted to
concentrate in his guitars...!
And Mariela added new colors to our “hard” sounds...
We worked hard preparing new material... and again playing in every possible
place...
Unfortunately at that point prog-rock had already become a kind of “elitist”
music in Argentina... so reaching radios and record labels was even more
difficult than before...!!
Fortunately some time later we got to know Andres Valle and Jorge Piazza from
the Argentine Prog rock association.... Can you believe it..? We had played pure
classical prog rock for 20 years in Argentina... almost since our childhood...
and we didn’t know about the Argentine prog-rock association..!!! Ok.... These
kind of things just happen here in Argentina.....!
The fact is that Andres and Jorge helped us to move towards the making of our
“Opera prima”.. and connected us with Alberto Vanasco.... who gave us a great
hand to clarify the technical and commercial aspects......... and the first
Album project was on its track...!!
